¡Ay Papi!

Meet Oscar Castillo Hernandez, a.k.a. Papi. He is the 80 year old father of Henier, our neighbor and owner of our house. Oscar is very sweet, and is great shape for 80. The thing is that his mental state is kind of in disarray. He loves to wander over to our side of the house and look into the windows. He isn’t really looking into the windows as much as he is talking to the reflection in the window. Yesterday was funny. He must have walked in and our of our back patio about 20 times. Now to get to our patio, he must move all of the rocks and the piece of wood we are using to block the way in. Then he has to jump down about 2 and 1/2 feet onto our patio. Ok...so I’m trying to eat lunch and watch some TV and the next thing I know, Oscar pops into view and starts talking into the window. I look up and he starts to dance! For about 4 minutes straight, he was dancing. It looked Macarena-ish. I think he likes me although I can’t understand a word he says. The only thing I understand and when he calls me “Amigo.”  So later on in the day, I was hanging our laundry out to dry and all of a sudden I heard the smack of his slippers hit the tile on our patio. He shuffles across the patio and pops his head between the hanging clothes and says, “Buenas!” (a typical Costa Rican greeting). Then he starts rambling really fast in Spanish. The only thing I understood was that he would come back later when the clothes were dry.

Fast forward to this morning.....
Amy and I wake up and get ready to go down to the school for work. As we leave the house, I notice that Oscar is wearing one of my shirts! All we could do was laugh. Ana, the maid, took the shirt from Oscar and threw it in the wash. I guess it could have been worse. He could have put on Amy’s underwear!
