So we finally made it to Costa Rica. It was hell getting here. I woke up at 4am to get my shuttle to the airport. Amy was a bit closer to the airport since she was at her mom’s house, and her mom drove her to the airport. We had about 500 pounds of baggage between the 2 of us, but I’d say about 350 pounds of it were Amy’s shoes. Needless to say we had to pay $320 extra to get our bags on the flight. Do you think we brought too much stuff? Who knows? I mean seriously, how much stuff are you supposed to pack when you are going to be somewhere for an entire year? I’d say that was one of the hardest things to do....decide what can you actually live with out for an entire year. I guess we will find out if we over-packed once we find a place to live. OH YEAH....did I mention that? We have no idea where we are living. We have no idea where we are working. All we do know is that we have a TON of crap to lug around and no place to call home.
On the brighter side of things, there is a torrential downpour outside! It’s the rainy season in Costa Rica so I guess we’d better get used to it. For now, we are living in Heredia, a city just north of San José (the capital of Costa Rica). It’s different than I expected. I thought it would be a lot smaller and a lot less bustling, but it’s just like any smaller city you’d find in the US. Well may be not. There are tons of people buzzing around all the time (unlike the ghost town of Denver). There is a cool central park area, lots of coffee shops, bars, and internet cafés. Amy has already lived here once when she was in college, but she said the city has changed a bit so we are both excited to explore our new home......that is if we can find a place here and jobs.
We are staying at the Hotel Heredia for 10,000 colones a night. The works out to about $20. 500 colones = $1. The hotel is a lot better than I had pictured. We have a room with a double bed and a twin. There is a TV, and the shower has hot water. I have actually stayed in crappier places in the US. So the Hotel is great in my eyes, but I can for see that we will get sick of living in one room with our 500 pounds of baggage. So I guess that wraps up day number 1 of 365. Can’t wait to see what day 2 has in store for us.
